Minnesota Twins hire scout to scour Island for talent

The Minnesota Twins are hunting for another sa国际传媒 baseball star like Justin Morneau, and they聮ve acquired the services of Victoria聮s Gautam Srivastava to help them in their goal.

Srivastava, the general manager of the Victoria Eagles of the sa国际传媒 Premier Baseball League, was this week named a regional scout for the American League club. Srivastava will work under the Twins聮 Canadian scout, Mark Wilson. Srivastava聮s duties will include tracking players 聴 both potential draft picks and current prospects 聴 on the Island and in Vancouver.

聯The sa国际传媒 Premier League has graduated numerous big-name players into the ranks of Major League Baseball, and the Twins are convinced having one of their scouts based in sa国际传媒 gives them a leg up in identifying local talent,聰 Srivastava said in a statement.

Rowing honours for UVic women

The University of Victoria Vikes rowing teams were in fine form at last weekend聮s Head of the Gorge and Head of the Elk competitions as they geared up for this weekend聮s Canadian University Rowing Championships in Vancouver.

The Vikes women聮s eight team won the gold medal at the Head of the Gorge, edging out UBC, while the men聮s eight squad was narrowly beaten by UBC. UVic聮s men聮s varsity pairs team also won gold, as did UVic聮s Antje von Seydlitz in women聮s singles.

Hockey midgets hit the road

The South Island Royals continued their lengthy sa国际传媒 Major Midget Hockey League road trip last weekend, picking up a point on the mainland against the Vancouver North East Chiefs.

The Royals dropped the opener Saturday against the Chiefs by a 6-2 score, but South Island bounced back to earn a 4-4 tie Sunday.

Getting the Royals聮 goals on Sunday were Cole Pickup, Garrett Stankoven and Jack Rachwalski with a pair.

The Royals聮 record now sits at 3-6-3, while the Chiefs improved to 7-3-2.

Next up for the Royals is a trip to Trail this weekend to face the Kootenay Ice

(2-8).

Vikes to offer coaching clinic

The University of Victoria Vikes women聮s soccer team is hosting the CIS national championship next week, but the activities won聮t just be focused on the field.

The Vikes are bringing in sa国际传媒聮s top women聮s soccer coach to help pass along some tips to prospective coaches on the Island.

John Herdman, who guided sa国际传媒聮s senior national women聮s team to a bronze medal at the London Olympics last summer, will be hosting a Coaches Corner session on Nov. 11 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., before the bronze- and gold-medal games.

The session is open to anyone on the Island and costs $10.
