Mixed fortunes for sa国际传媒 sevens teams

sa国际传媒 went 0-3 on Friday in pool play, including a spirited 26-19 loss to 2016 Rio Olympic Games champion Fiji.

That was followed Saturday with a 22-14 loss to Kenya before sa国际传媒 defeated Russia 27-5 on two tries by Pat Kay of Duncan, then beat Uganda 20-17 on a try at the death by former University of Victoria Vikes star Nathan Hirayama.

The latter two games represented the first victories of the Damian McGrath coaching era. The Englishman was brought to Langford this fall to guide the national team after it failed to qualify for Rio.

The Canadians continue with the South Africa Sevens in Cape Town next weekend, the second tournament of the HSBC Rugby Sevens Men鈥檚 World Series.

The Langford-based Olympic-bronze medallist Canadian women鈥檚 team began its post-Rio season by placing sixth this weekend in the Dubai Sevens.

Both the 10-event men鈥檚 and six-event women鈥檚 2016-17 World Series seasons will feature Canadian stops. The men鈥檚 HSBC sa国际传媒 Sevens is March 11-12 at sa国际传媒 Place in Vancouver and the women鈥檚 HSBC sa国际传媒 Sevens is May 27-28 at Westhills Stadium in Langford.
