The Calgary Dinos showed what they could do last season when they went all the way to the U Sports national championship game in men鈥檚 basketball before bowing to the Carleton Ravens.
There was no shame in losing, considering the Ravens dynasty has won six consecutive national titles and 12 in the last 14 years.
The Dinos, who want to make another deep run, are ranked No. 4 in sa国际传媒. They flashed those credentials with a 97-72 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday night on Ken and Kathy Shields Court in the CARSA Performance Gym to sweep their two-game sa国际传媒 West conference set.
鈥淭he Dinos can hurt you in a lot of different ways,鈥 UVic head coach Craig Beaucamp said before the series.
The Dino who can inflict the most pain is Thomas Cooper, the reigning sa国际传媒 West MVP. Cooper was held relatively in check with 23 points Saturday, but Calgary has other tools in its kit as Mambi Diawara led the Dinos with 24 points. Grant Sitton led UVic with 17 points while Scott Kellum added 14, Jake Newman 11 and Wayne Tucker 10.
The Vikes are now 1-3 after splitting their sa国际传媒 West season-opening set 1-1 last weekend in Regina against the Cougars. The Dinos moved to 3-1 after splitting their opening weekend against the Manitoba Bisons.
The Vikes women鈥檚 hoops team (2-2) edged Calgary (2-2) 55-54 Saturday in CARSA Gym to sweep the Dinos over the weekend. Jenna Bugiardini led the Vikes with 18 points and Nicole Karstein 16 points with their play through the middle, and Anna Giannattasio with 12 points from her outside shooting touch. Brianna Ghali led Calgary with 10 points.
Bugiardini鈥檚 12 rebounds were also crucial for the Vikes.
鈥淚t鈥檚 tough beating a team back to back,鈥 said UVic coach Dani Sinclair, whose team led by 11 points only to see Calgary make a late charge.
鈥淲e relaxed a bit in the fourth quarter and gave them momentum. But a win is a win, especially in this league. We stuck with the game plan. We got good efforts from multiple people.鈥
