Mother Nature helps give HarbourCats a well-deserved rest

In an inaugural season, firsts come fast and furious, and the Victoria HarbourCats will record two back-to-back. The first rain-out in team history was Thursday with the scheduled game against the Bells in Bellingham washed out.

The first rain-out in team history was Thursday with the scheduled game against the Bells in Bellingham washed out.

Victoria鈥檚 first-ever game against the Bend Elks is tonight at Royal Athletic Park.

The best recent athlete to come out of the central Oregon community of Bend is 2012 London Summer Olympics decathlon champion Ashton Eaton. But the town鈥檚 baseball team isn鈥檛 too shabby, either.

The Elks lead the South Division of the West Coast League and were 10-4 heading into Thursday鈥檚 scheduled game in Kitsap against the BlueJackets.

The HarbourCats are atop the North Division at 8-3, making for an intriguing three-game set that concludes with a Sunday matinee at Royal Athletic.

Thursday鈥檚 rainout in Bellingham was of benefit to Victoria in one way as it heads into the Bend series.

鈥淩ealistically, it helps our pitching, with three games to worry about this weekend,鈥 said HarbourCats manager Dennis Rogers.

Victoria currently has only eight active pitchers on the roster.

鈥淚n a perfect world, with so many games, you would like to have 12 or 13 pitchers,鈥 said Rogers, the former Vancouver Canadians manager, who managed in both the A鈥檚 and Pirates minor-league organizations and who currently coaches Riverside Junior College.

The HarbourCats concluded the first road trip in team history 3-2.

鈥淭he old baseball adage is you want to be .500 on the road,鈥 said Rogers.

Atlanta Braves draft pick Alex Real of the HarbourCats comes into the weekend ranked second in league batting with a .412 average.
