Island teams stole the show at last weekend’s sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Lacrosse Association bantam box lacrosse provincial championships in Kelowna and Vernon.
The Juan de Fuca Whalers, led by tournament all-star goaltender Adam Bland, captured the gold medal in the Bantam A1 final. The Whalers defeated the Ridge Meadows Burrards 6-4 in the championship game.
In the Bantam A2 final, the Victoria-Esquimalt Eagles came up just short of the gold medal, losing 7-5 to the Surrey Rebels.
In Bantam B action, the Campbell River Ravens defeated the Shuswap Outlaws 8-3 in the gold-medal final.
Winning bronze medals were Peninsula in the A2 division, Juan de Fuca in Bantam B and Juan de Fuca in Bantam C.
Other Island players making tournament all-star teams included Shaun Davison of the Peninsula Warriors and Bryan Toth of Victoria-Esquimalt in Bantam A2; Ethan Mainprize of Campbell River and Jake Morin of Juan de Fuca in Bantam B; and Jordan Sandhu of Juan de Fuca in Bantam C.
Peewee AAA ball title is on the line
The Eagles are hoping to soar to a Baseball sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ peewee triple-A provincial title this weekend on their home turf.
The Victoria Black Eagles and Victoria Red Eagles welcome some of the best young baseball players in the province to Carnarvon Park for the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ championship tournament. The two Eagles teams are joined by Abbotsford, Kamloops, Coquitlam-Port Moody, Cloverdale, Burnaby, Ladner, Richmond and Vancouver, with games running from this morning right through to Sunday afternoon’s final.
The Black Eagle’s first game is today at noon against Burnaby, while the Red Eagles play at noon against Ladner.
The semifinals are slated for Sunday at 10 a.m., with the championship game scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
Peewee A ball teams eye zone title
A ticket to the Baseball sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ peewee A provincials is on the line this weekend at Rotary Park near Sidney.
Victoria hosts the Island zone championship with the winner advancing to the provincial tournament starting July 31 in Surrey.
The host team will be joined by teams from Nanaimo, Ladysmith, and Salt Spring Island in the round-robin event. Action begins Saturday at noon with Victoria taking on Nanaimo. There are also games Saturday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday’s games are scheduled for 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Pro-junior teams shine at Olympic View
The home team had an impressive showing at Monday’s PGA of sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Pro-Junior Championship at Olympic View Golf Course.
The squad from Olympic View — pro Matt Matheson and juniors Bryce Tickner, Jacob Magee and Tyson Girardet — finished tied for second in the tournament, three shots back of the winning team from Morgan Creek of pro Tim Wilson and juniors Matthew Mcconnachie, Riley Janssen and Keaton Cameron. Also in the tie for second was the Shaughnessy team of pro Alan Palmer and juniors Michael Ferguson, Spencer Bowering and Cole Bowering.
Finishing sixth was Alberni, led by pro Brian Rands, and in a tie for seventh was an Uplands foursome led by pro Ben Griffin and a Royal Colwood team led by pro Mac McLeod.
Victoria Curling Club gets new GM
There’s a new face at the helm of the Victoria Curling Club.
Ken MacDonald started his new job as general manager of the VCC on Monday and he brings a wealth of experience with him. MacDonald has spent time as general manager of the Abbotsford, Vancouver and Medicine Hat curling clubs. He also is a Level 3 certified curling coach and Level 1 ice technician. MacDonald is also a member of the National Task Force for Curling sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½.
