If you want a sneak peak at what the 2020 Canadian Little League Championship might look like, head to Layritz Little League over the next week and check out the sa国际传媒 9-10 Little League Championship tournament.
It鈥檚 this group of young players on the Layritz squad that will make up the bulk of the host team for the 2020 11-12-year-old nationals in two years time.
The 9-10 provincial tournament begins Saturday with Greater Victoria (District 7) champ Central Saanich taking on Langley (District 3) at 11 a.m. That game is followed by the opening ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. Host Layritz plays its opener at 6 p.m. Saturday against Hastings (District 6).
Little Mountain and West Vancouver round out the field.
Round-robin action continues through Wednesday. The semifinals are scheduled for next Friday at 1 and 4 p.m., with the championship game slated for July 21 at noon.
Vikes soccer team adds top recruit
Head coach Bruce Wilson hopes he has added the final piece of the University of Victoria Vikes men鈥檚 soccer team鈥檚 future puzzle.
Wilson announced Tuesday that he has signed his final player of his 2018-19 recruiting class and he adds instant versatility and leadership to the Vikes squad.
Matt Hobson is coming off an impressive season with Fleetwood Park Secondary and the Surrey product is hoping it carries over into U Sports.
Hobson was named Fleetwood Park鈥檚 Dragonheart Award and Scholarship winner. The award goes to the student/athlete who displays extraordinary athletic excellence, leadership and sportsmanship. The talented midfielder/centre back was also the valedictorian for his graduating class.
The 5-foot-11 Hobson was a multi-sport athlete in high school, competing in soccer, track and cross country in his senior year.
Hobson was also a member of Surrey United in the sa国际传媒 Soccer Premier League.
Along with Hobson, the Vikes incoming class this fall includes Matteo Ventura (Reynolds), Rees Goertzen (Mount Douglas), Niko Cristante (VIU), Evan Wills (Reynolds) and Sergio Duran (Reynolds).
The Vikes kick off their season Aug. 24 in Prince George against the UNBC Timberwolves.
Rowers set to make splash at Elk Lake
More than 500 rowers will invade Elk Lake this weekend as the Victoria City Rowing Club hosts the sa国际传媒 Championships/West Regatta today through Sunday.
Rowers from sa国际传媒, Alberta and the U.S. Pacific Northwest will be in attendance as they tuneup for the upcoming world junior championships, U-21 Canadian Trans-Tasman Series and the Canadian Royal Henley Regatta.
Action on the lake begins today at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday鈥檚 races begin at 6:30 a.m. with rowers competing in men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 U-19, U-17, U-15, Open and Masters divisions.
Victoria鈥檚 Pickrell on road to success
Victoria鈥檚 Riley Pickrell continues to pedal his way up the international cycling ladder.
Pickrell was named this week to the Canadian team that will compete in the 2018 Tour de l鈥橝bitibi junior men鈥檚 stage race from July 16 to 22 in Val-d鈥橭r, Que.
Pickrell, the national criterium champion, is one of two sa国际传媒 riders on the six-person national junior squad for the event, Thomas Schellenberg of Chilliwack is the other.
