The Belmont junior girls team, guided by coach Ken Lowe, just capped off a remarkable season that saw them go 96-0 and win last weekend’s provincial championship.

At the provincial tournament in South Delta, the group of Grade 9 and 10 girls from Belmont won all seven of their matches, winning 14 straight sets, to claim the gold medal. In the championship match, Belmont beat the M.E.I. Tigers of Abbotsford. Belmont’s Savanah Purdy was named the tournament’s MVP, while Hannah May and Miranda Cyr were named to the first all-star team.

Other members of the Bulldogs include Gracie May, Olivia Godek, Sydney Belton, Atessa Flammand, Taylee Pomponio, Devon Wooley, Kendra West, Maggie Mackinnon.

• Melges 24 worlds on way to Victoria

Sailing fans will want to be in Victoria in the spring of 2018.

The Royal Victoria Yacht Club has been awarded the 2018 Melges 24 World Championships. More than 100 boats are expected to compete in the event, which will be held May 31 to June 8 of 2018.

The Melges 24 sport boat was developed by America’s Cup racer Buddy Melges in 1992. It is a high-performance boat that is capable of speeds over 25 knots (50 kilometres per hour). The 2016 Melges 24 World Championships will be held in Miami.

• ’Rocks add Sperling to front office

The Victoria Shamrocks have a new face in their front office.

Former Westshore Rebels director of media and community relations Jason Sperling has been named the Shamrocks’ operations manager.

Sperling, an alumnus of MacEwan University and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, will work directly with Shamrocks president Jim Hartshorne and general manager Chris Welch and co-ordinate staff and volunteers during game days.

• Zanatta golden in the pool for UBC

Victoria swimmer Keegan Zanatta made a huge splash at last weekend’s sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West Swimming Championships, and in doing so was named the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West Male First Star of the Week.

Zanatta, a member of the UBC Thunderbirds swim team, won five gold medals and one bronze over the three-day event. Zanatta was victorious in the 100, 200, 400, 4x100 and 4x200-metre freestyle events, and earned a bronze medal in the 1,500-metre freestyle.

Zanatta’s performance helped the Thunderbirds win their third straight sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West swimming title and earn a trip to the CIS swimming championships Feb. 26-28 in Quebec City.

• Spartans chase sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ football titles

The Mount Douglas Rams junior and senior varsity teams are not the only local football clubs in championship games this weekend.

Both the Victoria Spartans bantam and midget teams will compete for titles on Saturday at the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Community Football Association finals in Langley.

The Spartans (7-3) face the South Delta Rams (10-0) at 4 p.m. in the bantam championship, followed by the midget Spartans (7-3) versus the Langley Stampeders (9-1) at 6:30 p.m. Langley defeated the midget Victoria team 25-7 in the regular season, while the Spartans fell 34-7 to South Delta in bantam regular-season action.

The midget team defeated the North Shore Bears 20-17 in Sunday’s semifinals to advance, while the bantams dumped North Langley 24-8.
