It was an Island sweep at the recent sa国际传媒 Mid-Amateur and Mid-Masters golf championships.
Victoria鈥檚 Craig Doell and Parksville鈥檚 Josee Deslauriers each won both the mid-amateur and mid-master titles.
At the 54-hole men鈥檚 event at Kokanee Springs Golf Resort, Doell, who plays out of Victoria Golf Club, shot a final-round 70 but needed five playoff holes to defeat Cameron Powell of Fernie to win the mid-amateur title. Doel won the mid-masters event, for golfers 40 and older, by one shot over Sandy Harper of Nanaimo.
On the women鈥檚 side, Deslauriers shot a final-round 75 for an 11-over-par total and a five-shot win over Jackie Little of Procter in the mid-amateur event. Port Alberni鈥檚 Christina Proteau was third at 17-over. Little was also runner-up in the mid-masters competition.
Medal haul for Island soccer teams
Several Lower Island teams brought home hardware from last weekend鈥檚 Youth Provincial A and B Cup soccer tournaments.
At the boys A Cup at Newton Park in Surrey, the Saanich Fusion/Prospect Lake U-14 team won the gold medal and also claimed the Fair Play Award as the most sportsmanlike team. In the U-16 boys event, Bays/Peninsula earned the bronze medal, while the Bays/Peninsula/Juan de Fuca U-18 boys finished fourth and also were winners of the Fair Play Award.
At the girls A Cup at South Surrey Athletic Park, the Bays United U-13 squad won the bronze medal and the Fair Play Award, while the Cowichan Valley U-17 girls earned the silver medal, narrowly losing the final in extra time.
At the boys B Cup tournament in Vernon, Saanich Fusion teams won gold at the U-13 and U-17 levels, and the Bays United U-16 boys finished seventh and were awarded the Fair Play Award.
Blazers eye lacrosse three-peat
And then there were two in the Victoria Senior Lacrosse League.
The Victoria Blazers and Victoria Tugmen will play for the championship today at 8 p.m. at Archie Browning Sports Centre. The undefeated Blazers are looking for their third consecutive VSLL title, while the Tugmen upset the talented Victoria Jokers en route to the final.
Victoria鈥檚 Stone now NCAA coach
After a stellar career in NCAA Div. 1 women鈥檚 soccer, Victoria鈥檚 Molly Stone is moving into the coaching ranks.
Stone, who came up through the Lower Island and national training centre in Vancouver, has been named assistant coach of NCAA Div. 2 Malone University in Canton, Ohio.
After four years playing for the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where she was a three-time First Team All-Conference player, Stone helped coach the Island Wave U-14 girls team and at the Reynolds Secondary soccer academy. She heads to Malone fresh from a coaching stint at Berkshire Soccer Academy for Girls in Otis, Massachusetts.
While assisting at Malone, Stone will begin pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in organizational leadership this fall.
