That’s the situation for two Victoria Little League softball teams this weekend.
Layritz is hosting the Little League Softball Canadian Championship today through Sunday and the four-team tournament also features the Hampton Little League all-stars.
Two Alberta teams — Ponoka and Calgary — round out the field, with the winning team earning a ticket to the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon.
The round-robin portion of the national championship begins today at 9 a.m. with Ponoka and Calgary squaring off. That’s followed at noon with the all-Victoria matchup between Layritz and Hampton. At 3:30 today, Ponoka plays Hampton, while Layritz and Calgary play at 6:30 p.m.
The round robin continues Friday, with the semifinals slated for Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. On Sunday, the bronze-medal game goes at 11 a.m., followed by the championship final at 3 p.m.
Hampton shines at senior World Series
The Hampton Little League softball senior all-stars are far from home right now but holding their own against some of the world’s best teams at the Senior League Softball World Series in Lower Sussex, Delaware.
The Island squad started the tournament 2-0, but suffered its first defeat Wednesday at the hands of the U.S. Central Region squad from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Earlier, Hampton picked up wins over the U.S. Southeast and U.S. West champs.
Hampton will look to punch its ticket to the playoff round today when they take on Europe/Africa champs, Rotterdam/The Hague, the Netherlands.
The championship games goes Sunday.
Mill Bay’s Mandur heats up on links
Tristan Mandur continued his hot summer on the golf course last week with an impressive showing at the 53rd Annual Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at the Championship Course as the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Mandur shot rounds of 71, 71, 72 and 75 to finish in 50th place, the third-highest-placing Canadian behind Richmond’s Chris Crisologo, who was eighth, and Henry Lee of Coquitlam, who finished 46th.
Victoria teen Jeevan Sihota also had a strong tournament, finishing 53rd with rounds of 69, 72, 74 and 75.
Mandur’s summer isn’t finished. In two weeks he’ll tee it up at the 2019 U.S. Men’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina. Mandur qualified for the U.S. Amateur by finishing runner-up at a recent regional qualifier at Lake Spanaway Golf Course in Tacoma, Washington.
Island lacrosse teams golden
It was an Island sweep at the recent sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Lacrosse Association midget provincials at the Langley Events Centre.
Juan de Fuca Minor Lacrosse captured the Midget A1 gold medal with a 7-2 win over Ridge Meadows in the final.
That was preceded by Saanich taking the gold in the Midget A2 division with a 9-3 victory over Ridge Meadows in the championship game.
At the BCLA bantam provincials at the Panorama Recreation Centre, it was host Peninsula winning an all-Island final in the A2 division by a 7-2 score over Saanich. Noah DeBattista of Peninsula was named the A2 tournament MVP.
