Layritz opens play today at the 2018 Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon.

The Victoria team punched its ticket to the Softball World Series thanks to a victory over Lancaster Little League from Saint John, New Brunswick, in last weekend’s best-of-three national championship series.

Today at 1 p.m., Layritz begins World Series action against U.S. East from Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. They will play other Pool A games against Europe/Africa (Northwest Czech Republic), U.S. Southeast (Daniel Boone Little League from Gray, Tennessee) and U.S. West (Kirkland, Washington).

Pool B is made up of Asia-Pacific (Philippines), U.S. Central (Wheelersburgh, Ohio), Latin America (Monterrey, Mexico), Oregon and U.S. Southwest (River Ridge, Louisiana).

The tournament wraps up on Aug. 15 with the gold-medal game televised in the U.S. on ESPN.

Tier 1 ’Rocks best in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½

The Victoria Shamrocks family has at least one league championship to its name this season, thanks to the Tier 1 Junior Shamrocks.

The Tier 1 ’Rocks used their home-court advantage to its fullest, edging the Coquitlam Adanacs 8-5 in Game 3 of their best-of-three league final on Monday at The Q Centre.

Liam Phillips led the Shamrocks’ attack with four goals, while Denton McDonald added a pair and Isaac Swan and Jonathan Boyd chipped in singles. Ryan Atkinson picked up the win in net for the Shamrocks.

Victoria City rowers off to the Henley

It’s a big weekend for Victoria City Rowing Club as they send 14 athletes to the annual Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catharines, Ont.

Eleven junior rowers (U-17 and U-19) and three seniors have made the trek to Ontario for the 136th year of the regatta, which began Tuesday and wraps up Sunday and includes rowers from Europe, Australia and Latin America.

Reaume heats up at Pocono

Victoria driver Josh Reaume enjoyed a rest week last week, but not before making a move in Pennsylvania.

Reaume drove his Colonial Countertops Chevrolet Silverado to a 19th-place finish at the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series stop at Pocono International Raceway in Pennsylvania.

Starting in the 23rd position, Reaume got some luck as several trucks were penalized and forced to head to the back of the pack, and the Victoria driver jumped up to 12th before settling for 19th, one lap back from race winner and Monster Energy Cup Series veteran Kyle Busch.

Next up for Reaume is this Sunday’s stop at Michigan International Raceway.
