Names and Games: Rebels president Rob Lervold adds GM duties

Rob Lervold is going to be a little busier around the Westshore Rebels this summer.

The president of the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Football Conference team will also be taking on the role of general manager as current GM Jonathan Poppitt steps away from the team to focus on coaching in the Greater Victoria Minor Football Association and his new role as head coach of the junior varsity team at Spectrum Community School.

Lervold is a former Rebel himself, having played for the team in the late 1980s. He has a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Victoria and is currently the manager of Coast Capital Savings Credit Union.

Cedar hosts Island’s top runners

Runners across the Island will converge on Cedar this weekend for the third stop in the 2018 Island Race Series — the Cedar 12K.

The race begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday and starts and finishes at Cedar Intermediate Secondary on Gould Road.

Runners can register online at islandseries.org until 6 p.m. today. There is also race day registration on site.

Strathcona skiers shine in Alberta

The Strathcona Nordic Ski Club got a sneak peek at the track in Red Deer that will play host to the 2019 sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Winter Games, and they took an instant liking to it.

The Island club was in the central Alberta city recently for the Haywood NorAm/Western Canadian Championships and brought home several medals.

Leading the way was Tallon Noble, who won gold in the junior men’s skate sprint event and bronze in the classic mass start race.

Noble also helped the skate relay team earn bronze in the men’s open race.

Also winning a gold medal was Comox product Stephen Lamon in the juvenile boys’ skate sprint race. Gabe Gledhill of Cumberland earned bronze in the same event.

Next up for the Strathcona skiers is the second stop in the Teck sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Cup series this weekend in Prince George.

Alexander golden on judo mat

Victoria Judo Club members continue to close in on making the final roster for Team sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ and the Canadian championships.

Tristan Alexander led the Victoria club at the recent Saskatchewan Open Judo Championships, which is one of the main selection meets for the provincial team.

Alexander won gold in the U-21 men’s plus-100kg event, and silver in the senior men’s plus-100kg competition.

Jackson Minnick brought home a silver medal from the senior men’s minus-90kg event and bronze in the U-21 men’s minus-90kg division.

On the women’s side, Tiffany Coolican earned bronze in the senior women’s minus-57kg division.

The Victoria club members now gear up for the annual Pacific International meet March 3-4 in Richmond.
