The St. Andrew鈥檚 Sabres senior boys soccer team is heading to the provincial chamionship on a high note.
The Sabres, thanks to two goals from Ssuubi Walusimbi and singles from Andrew Pearse and Michael Keane, beat Glenlyon Norfolk School 4-0 in the gold-medal game at the Island single-A boys soccer championship Wednesday at Beckwith Park. Both teams advance to the provincial championship Nov. 2-4 at Nakusp, with St. Andrew鈥檚 the higher seed.
In the bronze-medal game Wednesday, Brookes Shawnigan defeated Port Hardy.
Island golfers win national tournament
A group of Island golfers made the trek to sa国际传媒鈥檚 other coast and came home with a serious piece of hardware.
A team from Cordova Bay Golf Course brought home top honours from the RBC PGA Scramble of sa国际传媒, but the final came down to a nerve-wracking putt.
Rodney Webber drained a four-foot par putt to claim the title at Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs in Inverness, N.S.
鈥淚鈥檓 no professional golfer, but standing over that putt I definitely felt like one,鈥 Webber said. 鈥淭hat was definitely the most pressure-packed putt I鈥檝e ever had in my life.鈥
Webber teamed up with Phil Kondrak, Eric Smith, Eric Watson and PGA of sa国际传媒 professional Nate Ollis to finish at 46-under par over the three-day event.
Their total net was .8 points better than the runner-up team from The Landings club in Ontario. A total of 22 teams 鈥 comprised of four amateurs and a PGA of sa国际传媒 pro 鈥 competed, advancing through regional qualifying events.
Also recently, Cordova Bay assistant pro Cory Renfrew topped the field in the Bayview Place Vikes Pro Tour championship, earning the top prize of $700 for the two-day event held at Uplands Golf Club and Victoria Golf Club. Gorge Vale assistant Isacc Weintraub took home the order of merit title for his season of work on the tour.
Island Wave to host youth soccer finals
This coming June, some of the top young soccer players in the province will converge on the Lower Island.
The Vancouver Island Wave select program was named this week as host for the 2018 sa国际传媒 Soccer Provincial Premier Cup. On June 23-24 winners from the sa国际传媒 Premier League will square off for the championship and, in the U-15 and U-17 divisions, the right to represent sa国际传媒 at the Canadian Club Championships.
Dragon boaters off to worlds
Eight paddlers from the Gorging Dragons dragon boat racing team will be wearing Canadian colours in China this weekend as they represent sa国际传媒 at the biannual World Nations Dragon Boat Championships in Kunming.
The eight paddlers 鈥 Tom Arnold, Matthew Michealis and Michael Weirmeier of Victoria; Joanne Cowan of Langford; Ron Stubbington of Saanich; Patti Cross of Cowichan Valley; Shari Woodside of Port McNeill and Jody Berry of Nanaimo 鈥 are members of Vancouver Island Paddling.
The Canadian team will compete in the 200 metres, 500m, 1,000m and 2,000m.
Reaume steady in World Truck Series
Victoria NASCAR driver Josh Reaume shook off some bad luck in qualifying and managed to finish last weekend鈥檚 Camping World Truck Series鈥 Fred鈥檚 250 on a high note.
After engine troubles forced him out of the first of two qualifying races at Taladega Motor Speedway in Alabama, Reaume got his Colonial Countertops Chevrolet Silverdado on track in the second qualifying race to just qualify for the main race in 30th spot.
And after a slow start to the crash-filled affair, Reaume managed to makes his way into the top 20 before settling for 21st spot.
Reaume now heads to Virginia鈥檚 Martinsville Speedway for the next Camping World Truck Series stop on Oct. 28.
