The stars are set to shine at St. Margaret’s School this weekend.
The 26th Annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic High School Basketball All-star Games will be played Saturday at St. Margaret’s. The top senior players from around the Island will battle in a North Island versus South Island format.
The boys’ B game kicks things off at 4:30 p.m., with the girls’ game going at 6:15 p.m. and the boys’ A game tipping off at 8 p.m.
Tickets for the games are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Vikes soccer rookie honoured
University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer team rookie Sarah Douglas capped off an impressive first CIS season by this week being named the winner of the Bate Family Great Victoria Sports Hall of Fame Award.
Douglas, a Glenlyon Norfolk School grad, was an offensive threat all season for the Vikes, scoring six goals in 10 games and helping the team win a bronze medal at the CIS national championship tournament.
Medal haul for Island brothers
The Newell brothers left their mark at the recent national karate championships in Toronto.
Geoffrey, 17, and Jean, 14, returned home to Victoria with multiple medals.
Geoffrey and Jean, both black belts who train with Fernando Correia in Duncan and Kraig Devlin in Victoria, helped lead sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ to the gold medal in team kata (forms) in the 14-17-year-old division, while Geoffrey went on to win a silver medal in fighting (kumite) in the 55-kilogram division. Geoffrey was also named the top junior male athlete of the year.
Runners set to invade Merville
The community of Merville is gearing up to host the second-to-last race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series.
Sunday’s Merville 15K goes at 11 a.m. at the Merville Community Hall and is hosted by the River Runners. Race day registration is $35 for adults and $30 for students.
After six races, the Prairie Inn Harriers lead the club standings, while Geoff Martinson and Jen Millar lead the individual standings.
The final event of the Island Race Series will be the Sooke River 10K on April 21.
Mud Sharks in spotlight
The Mud Sharks are headed for prime time.
The Port Alice minor hockey team has been named the Scotiabank Hockey Tonight Kids team for the April 20 Hockey Night in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ broadcast.
The Mud Sharks will introduce the NHL game on the pre-game show at 3:30 p.m. The team will tape the introduction today at 4:30 p.m. at Port Alice Arena.
