Names and Games: Victoria Curling Club more than up for the Challenge this weekend

It鈥檚 billed as the Ryder Cup on ice and the Victoria Curling Club is eager to defend its title on home ice.

The VCC will host the third annual South Island Challenge on Saturday with teams from Duncan to Victoria taking part.

The event sees each club with four teams of four players competing in a series of games and skills contests from 9 a.m. until the last draw at 6:30 p.m. The winning club gets to hang the South Island Challenge plaque in their home club for one year. Last year, the VCC narrowly edged out Duncan and Esquimalt. Juan de Fuca won the inaugural event.

Hundal giving back to Vikes soccer

Cam Hundal dominated the soccer pitch for the University of Victoria Vikes.

Now he wants to teach other players to do the same.

Hundal was named this week as an assistant coach on Bruce Wilson鈥檚 staff as the Vikes begin preparations for the 2018 season.

Hundal was a five-time sa国际传媒 West all-star during his playing career at UVic from 2011 to 2016. In 2015, the speedy striker/midfielder was named the CIS (now U Sports) player of the year and in his rookie season in 2011 he helped the Vikes win the national championship on their home turf at Centennial Stadium while being named the MVP of the tournament. After his university career, Hundal spent time with the Victoria Highlanders and Phoenix Rising FC.

Now he turns his attention to helping future Vikes, beginning with an off-season trip to Phoenix on Feb. 7-17 where the Vikes will face the Rising鈥檚 reserve team and Benedictine University.

SMUS hosts City Police Tournament

After a victory Tuesday night in Lower Island Senior Boys Basketball League play, the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags are heating up at the right time.

The Jags will host the annual Victoria City Police Tournament beginning today and running through Saturday.

St. Andrew鈥檚 will get things started with a 1:30 p.m. tipoff against Brandon, Man. Then the hosts go up against New Westminster at 3:30 p.m., followed by Lambrick Park and King George at 5:30 p.m. and Shawnigan Lake battling Maple Ridge at 7:30 p.m.

The semifinals go Friday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., with the gold-medal game slated for Saturday at 2:15 p.m.

Fraser Valley stars shine brightest

The stars of the Fraser Valley Soccer League invaded Hampton Park and spoiled the party for the host Vancouver Island Soccer League at the recent inter-provincial all-star weekend.

The over-35 squad got things started for the Fraser Valley as the FVSL all-stars defeated the VISL Masters Divisions all-stars 2-1. Francesco Cortini from Gorge Backfit had the lone VISL goal in the 78th minute. The Man of the Match was Shawn Blakeway from Fraser Valley鈥檚 Port Moody Rangers.

In the showcase game, the Open Men鈥檚 final, FVSL triumphed 3-2 in penalty kicks after the VISL stars had scored twice early in the second half to go up 2-0.

Patrick Nelson from Cowichan FC and Koby Greaves from Westcastle gave the home side the lead, but the visitors fought back with goals in the 75th and 86th minutes to forced the penalty kicks.

Okell on track for 2018 success

Bill Okell got his Sports Car Club of America U.S. Majors Tour season off to a fast start last weekend in Los Angeles.

Okell, of Victoria, drove his Huffaker Engineering Austin Healey MK I to second- and third-place finishes in the GT-Lite Series season opening races at U.S. Auto Club Speedway鈥檚 65,000-seat, 2.6-mile banked oval track.

Okell will be back in California in April as the next stop for the tour is at Bakersfield鈥檚 Button Willow Raceway Park.
