Two Victoria teenagers have taken big steps toward making the junior national karate team.
Anika Ocean Elliott and Malia Brodie, who are members of Varsity Performance Karate, won bronze medals at last weekend’s Canadian Junior National Karate Championships in Edmonton. The event was a key qualifier for the national junior team.
Ocean Elliott competed in the 12-13-year-old 42-kilogram female kumite division, while Brodie earned her bronze medal in the 16-17-year-old 53-kilogram female kumite division.
Also competing in Edmonton were Guillaume Claude, who finished fifth in the U-21 75-kilogram kumite event, Olivia Brodie, who was seventh in the 14-15-year-old 47-kilogram kumite and kata divisions, and Irvin Goraya, who placed ninth in the 16-17-year-old kumite class.
Free introduction to hockey for girls
The newly formed Capital Region Female Minor Hockey Association is gearing up for its first season and this spring they hope to provide an early opportunity for girls who haven’t played organized hockey, to give the sport a try — for free.
The CRFMHA is hosting a six-week session of Hockey sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½â€™s Esso Fun Day program. The program is for girls aged four to 20 who have never played organized hockey. There are six one-hour sessions and participants receive a jersey. Full hockey equipment is required and the CRFMHA has an equipment loan program.
The sessions begin on May 20 and run for four Mondays after that from 5 to 6 p.m. at Westhills Arena in Langford. The final session is slated for Sunday, June 23, at 9:30 a.m. at Pearkes Arena.

Young rugby players lace ’em up
Gordon Head Middle School is about to be overrun with future rugby players.
On Friday, more than 250 elementary school students — boys and girls — from around Greater Victoria will take part in the 46th annual Mini Rugby Jamboree.
The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., provides a safe, fun environment for young players to learn the game thanks to modified rules.
Following the jamboree, students can sign up for the Try Rugby program that takes place May 26 to June 23 on Sunday mornings at the University of Victoria’s Wallace Field. The Try Rugby program is a non-tackle introduction to the game.
