The Nanaimo Timbermen, who have missed the playoffs the past 10 years, shocked the visiting Victoria Shamrocks 12-9 in the Western Lacrosse Association鈥檚 Island derby Saturday night at Frank Crane Arena.
The Shamrocks fell to 1-1 and the Timbermen improved to 2-2.
Six-foot-three attacker Chase Fraser led Nanaimo with four goals and Drew Belgrave scored twice. Casey Jackson, Chris Wardle and Tyson Gibson scored twice each for Victoria, while former Big Ten Ohio State Buckeyes field lacrosse star Jesse King added four assists.
Pro NLL scoring star Rob Hellyer made his Shamrocks debut with three assists.
Shamrocks goaltender Cody Hagedorn faced 53 shots. Mike DeGirolamo of Nanaimo was on the receiving end of 44.
The Shamrocks face the defending WLA-champion New Westminster Salmonbellies tonight at the Q Centre in a rematch of the 2017 WLA final.
