Nanaimo’s Kesa Van Osch rink grabbed the third and final berth available to the Scotties sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Women’s Curling Championship over the weekend, defeating Diane Gushulak’s Royal City Curling Club foursome 7-5 in the C-event final of the first of two women’s open qualifying events in Kelowna.

Amy Gibson, also of Royal City, secured the A-event berth and Karla Thompson of Kamloops claimed the available B-event spot for provincials, slated for Jan. 19-24 at the Coquitlam Curling Club.

The Victoria Curling Centre team skipped by Sarah Wark will have a second opportunity to qualify at the Women’s Open 2 event in Maple Ridge, Dec. 11-13.

Van Osch — with sister Kalia and Marika at third and alternate, respectively, Shawna Jensen at second and lead Carley St. Blaze — recorded a 6-4 win over Wark in the C semifinal on Sunday morning before downing Gushulak in the afternoon final.

Wark also lost 6-5 to Van Osch in B-event play, giving up a deuce in the 10th as the VCC rink — with Simone Brosseau at third, Michelle Allen at second and Rachelle Kallechy at lead — finished 2-3 in Kelowna, never winning two straight.

Gushulak lost out in all three event finals in A, B and C.

Gibson, Thompson and Van Osch join Prince George’s Patti Knezevic (defending sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ champ) and veteran Kelly Scott of Kelowna (Canadian Team Ranking System points leader) for provincials. Three more teams are expected to qualify out of Maple Ridge’s Golden Ears Club.

Knezevic edged Wark in last year’s sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Scotties final in an extra end.
