The Victoria Royals won a Western Hockey League game a day after a season-defining trade, defeating Edmonton 3-2 before 6,074 fans Friday at Rogers Place to snap the Oil Kings’ seven-game home winning streak.
Forwards Carson Miller and Kody McDonald, acquired from the Prince Albert Raiders on Thursday in a trade for Royals top-five franchise career points scorer Dante Hannoun, were both in the lineup for Victoria (19-15-1).
The six-foot-one, 20-year-old McDonald, who has more than 500 career penalty minutes in the WHL, picked up 12 more in the last minute Friday on a roughing penalty and 10-minute misconduct.
McDonald and 18-year-old Miller were both minus-one with three and two shots on goal, respectively.
Going into the game, Victoria head coach Dan Price said getting early traction on the road was going to be the key.
His players delivered on that requirement, with goals by Brandon Cutler (on a three-point birthday night) and Logan Doust giving the Royals a 2-0 lead in the first period. Vince Loschiavo cut that in half for Edmonton, heading into the first break.
D-Jay Jerome put the Royals ahead by two again early in the second period before Andrew Fyten brought the Central Division-leading Oil Kings (21-13-7) back again to within one. But veteran Victoria goaltender Griffen Outhouse slammed the door shut after that in an outstanding 35-save performance. Former Royals goaltender Dylan Myskiw made 24 saves for an Edmonton team that that also includes defenceman Jacson Alexander from Esquimalt.
Ralph Jarratt, the Royals’ 20-year-old defenceman, remained out of the lineup.
Victoria, which had to clear out of Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre to make room for the 2019 IIHF world junior championship, is 3-2 on its six-game road trip through the Central Division. The swing concludes tonight in Red Deer against the Rebels (22-13-2).
