Oak Bay Bays retain sa国际传媒 boys' volleyball crown

Move over Mount Douglas, there聮s a second two-time provincial high school champion in town.

Shortly after the Mount Douglas Rams captured their second-straight senior boys聮 football title in Vancouver on Saturday night, the Oak Bay Bays were busy pulling off a similar feat in Kelowna at the triple-A volleyball championships.

Oak Bay downed Kelowna 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22) late Saturday night to add their second consecutive sa国际传媒 crown as the Island flexed its muscles with a weekend provincial sweep in the two major senior boys聮 events.

聯It was great,聰 said Bays head coach Al Carmichael. 聯It聮s been a couple of pretty good years.聰

The Bays, who lost just three sets throughout the 20-team event and were 64-7 overall this season, defeated Moscrop of Burnaby 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-12) in the semifinals, after erasing Elgin Park of Surrey 3-1 (25-13, 20-25, 25-18, 25-14) in quarter-finals.

Oak Bay opened up the playoff draw with a 3-0 victory over Island opponent Dover Bay (25-18, 25-18, 25-23).

The last team to win two straight triple-A volleyball crowns was KLO (Kelowna Lakes and Orchards) in 1994-95. Mount Douglas did it in 1987-88, with Carmichael at the helm for the second title before moving to Oak Bay.

聯We came close in 2007, finishing second that year after winning in 2006,聰 said Carmichael, who will have just two returning starters next season. 聯Three in a row? I don聮t think we聮ll be able to do that, but three out of four is our goal.聰

Oak Bay was led by Lars Bornemann, who was named the most outstanding player, and Leon Young and Elion Wong, who were first-team all-stars. Graeme Pendergast received an honorable mention.

聯It was a situation where we knew we were the most skilled team, and we just needed to play mentally in a manner where we could let our skill overcome the opposition,聰 said Carmichael.

聯We didn聮t have to play outside ourselves, we just had to play at our ability level going into it. That was the mental game plan we had.聰

The Bays adjusted tactically versus various opponents and allowed their skill level to take over.

Ballenas finished 11th at the triple-A event, Dover Bay15th and Belmont 17th.

In double-A play, Gulf Islands placed fifth while Pacific Christian was eighth.

Cam Fennema of Pacific Christian and Kyle Matheson of Gulf Islands were named second-team all-stars while Gulf Islands聮 Lukas Wenzel was an honorable mention.

Carmichael was delighted that the Island teams stuck around to cheer on his Bays in the final match.

聯The boys really appreciated that and fed off it. Even playing in the opposition聮s school gym we had exceptional fan support, at least equal to the home team,聰 said Carmichael.
