The Oak Bay Bays鈥 goal-scoring woes during the regular season were nowhere to be seen on Day 1 of the Island triple-A senior boys鈥 soccer championship on Wednesday.

The Bays scored eight goals in each of their first two games in an 8-3 win over Cowichan in the morning and an 8-0 victory against the under-manned Claremont Spartans in the afternoon.

Diego Maffia scored three times in the afternoon win while Marcel Petruzzelli, Liam King, Matias Earthy-Find, Koby Greaves and Ben Tyson all tallied once for the Bays, who are co-coached by Richard Fast and Brent Garraway.

鈥淲e had that problem this year. It helps that we had Koby Greaves, a very skilled player who hasn鈥檛 been available all year,鈥 said Fast. 鈥淧utting him out there with the players we have, he鈥檚 that one guy who is a threat and can direct people and create opportunities for others. We鈥檙e playing well at the right time.鈥

The results set up a clash of the titans to determine the Pool A winner as Oak Bay battles Dover Bay in the final round-robin game at 9 a.m. Dover Bay downed both Cowichan and Claremont by 5-0 results. The winner of this morning鈥檚 matchup will advance to the final at 2:30 p.m. at Oak Bay.

In Pool B, Reynolds defeated Spectrum 5-0 and Mount Douglas 1-0 and is set to play Nanaimo District at 10:30 a.m. today at Braefoot. Nanaimo District is 1-1, similar to Mount Douglas, which faces 0-2 Spectrum at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Bay.

The top two teams advance to provincials.
