The Oak Bay Breakers鈥 magical season continues as coach Rob Kinnear鈥檚 senior girls claimed the Island triple-A basketball championship in Nanaimo on Saturday, defeating the host Dover Bay Dolphins 81-34.
Oak Bay remains undefeated this season and is the favourite to claim a sa国际传媒 title in Langley, March 1-4.
They will savour this win for now.
鈥淲e came out of it injury free, everyone played really well. You never want to downplay an Island title, it鈥檚 always exciting to win an Island title and I鈥檓 very proud of how they took care of business,鈥 said Kinnear.
Oak Bay鈥檚 Sophie De Goede was named the tournament鈥檚 most valuable player.
The setback was the first loss of the year for the Dolphins, who also advance to provincials as the Islands second representative.
Earlier on, the Claremont Spartans defeated Alberni Secondary 67-39 in the morning and then downed Stellys 57-36 in the afternoon to finish third. The Spartans will now get to play a challenge game to also try to qualify for provincials.
The Spartans will play host to that game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. against a yet to be determined opponent and at a location also to be announced.
鈥淲e did the job and won both today to finish third and stay alive,鈥 said Claremont coach Darren Reisig.
Meanwhile in senior boy鈥檚 play, Nanaimo District defeated Wellington 80-63 in the North Island triple-A championship final, while Brentwood College dumped Shawnigan Lake 85-41 in the double-A North Island final. Brentwood College is rated No. 1 in sa国际传媒
