The Oak Bay Bays (seeded No. 4) opened the sa国际传媒 High School Boys quadruple-A Basketball Championship at the Langley Events Centre with a 64-54 win over defending champion Yale (No. 13) on Thursday afternoon.
Coach Chris Franklin鈥檚 Bays will face No. 5 Walnut Grove in a quarter-final tonight at 8:15. The teams have split two games this season.
鈥淭hey're all going to be good games from here on in. At quadruple-A, there are no easy games,鈥 said Franklin, whose Bays were led by Jayden Touchie, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while defending against Yale鈥檚 top player.
Meanwhile, No. 10-ranked Cowichan lost a close contest, 90-83, against No. 7 W.J. Mouat in a noon showdown.
In triple-A play, No. 8 Mark Isfeld opened with an impressive 68-51 win over No. 9 Duchess Park of Prince George, while No. 12 Nanaimo District lost 62-58 to No. 5 St. Thomas More. And No. 11 Lord Byng upset No. 6 Wellington 66-62.
In double-A play, No. 5 St. Michaels University School hammered No. 12 Kelly Road 84-37, while Shawnigan Lake (No. 11) toppled Pacific Academy (No. 6) 90-74. No. 2 Lambrick Park faced No. 15 Smithers at 8:15 p.m. (result unavailable at press time).
The single-A Duncan Christian Chargers (No. 5) eked out a 78-76 win over Immaculata in overtime to start their provincials off on the right foot and will face No. 4 Credo Christian today at 5:15 p.m. in quarter-finals at Langley. St. Ann鈥檚 Academy went on to down St. Andrew鈥檚 64-42.
At the single-A senior girls鈥 championship in Duncan, the host Duncan Christian Chargers (No. 12) lost 75-43 to No. 5 Similkameen. St. Andrew鈥檚 (No. 16) faced No. 1 Langley Christian in the last game of the night (result also unavailable).
