The Victoria Grizzlies gladly said goodbye to October on Sunday as the month of competition was an indifferent one for the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hockey League club.

A 3-2 double-overtime loss at home to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks dropped the Grizzlies’ record to 5-6 over the stretch of 23 competitive days in the month, with two of the losses coming in overtime at The Q Centre.

Victoria’s overall record now stands at 10-7-2-0, good for 22 points. That leaves the Grizzlies tied with Powell River atop the Island Division standings, but the Kings do have three games in hand, not to mention a greater goal differential.

The Kings have tallied 64 goals in 16 games and allowed just 36 for a plus-28 differential. The Grizzlies have surrendered 56, one more than they have scored for a minus-1 difference.

On Sunday, the locals were sparked by two goals in a 1:08 span as Ethan Nother gave the 844 home fans something to cheer about at 10:27 of the opening period. He then quickly set up 16-year-old rookie Alex Newhook for the two-goal advantage.

Austin Chorney beat Grizzlies goaltender Shawn Parkinson at 16:29 of the second period and the visitors evened the score on a power play 1:55 into the third period on Trey Thomas’s effort, as Grizzlies head coach and GM Craig Didmon was ejected following a bench minor and game misconduct to start the third frame.

It was the Silverbacks’ fifth power-play chance of the afternoon, compared with just one for Victoria.

Noah Wakeford ended the scoring at 2:03 of the second overtime as the Silverbacks improve their record to 9-8-2-0.

It was Salmon Arm’s third victory in overtime this season and followed a 5-1 setback in Duncan the night previous to the Cowichan Valley Capitals and a 4-3 OT loss in Surrey on Friday.

That win by the Capitals on Saturday was just the team’s second victory in 17 outings this campaign.

As for Victoria, the team will get back to work on Friday at home against Merritt and again on Sunday at The Q Centre against Trail.

On Sunday, Parkinson stopped 40 shots in goal in the OT loss while Kyle Dumba blocked 32 in the win for Salmon Arm. The Silverbacks were 1-for-6 on power plays, while the Grizzlies were 0-for-2.
