Older athletes set to invade Victoria for 2021 55-plus sa国际传媒 Games

The mantra of 鈥渟port for life鈥 will come alive on the Island in three years when Greater Victoria hosts the 2021 55-plus sa国际传媒 Games.

The mantra of 鈥渟port for life鈥 will come alive on the Island in three years when Greater Victoria hosts the 2021 55-plus sa国际传媒 Games.

The hosting announcement was made Tuesday at Royal Athletic Park, which will be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies.

The 55-plus sa国际传媒 Games is an annual, multi-sport competition celebrating active seniors. The Games attract more than 3,000 athletes, participating in 23 sports, over five days.

An economic impact study in 2017 found that the 55-plus sa国际传媒 Games provide more than $3.3 million to the host community. Host communities also benefit from the development of capacity to host large multi-sport events by training volunteers and gaining improved infrastructure through the Games Legacy program.

鈥淚t is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our community and welcome visitors from across British Columbia,鈥 said Paul Nursey, CEO of Destination Greater Victoria.

Keith Wells, executive director of the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission, noted the trend of athletes playing their chosen sport well into the masters divisions.

鈥淭he 55-plus sa国际传媒 Games gives these athletes a chance to continue to compete and pursue their passion for sport,鈥 he said.

鈥淭his is also an inclusive event with an emphasis on participation and fun.鈥

The Games are funded primarily by the sa国际传媒 Seniors Games Society and the provincial government. They are considered an important part of the Sport 4 Life Long Term Athlete Development Program, with many of the provincial sport organizations providing support.
