Pacific FC assured continuity on its back line for the 2023 Canadian Premier League soccer season by re-signing veteran defenders Amer Didic and Thomas Meilleur-Giguère.
Didic is six-foot-four and a twice sa国际传媒-capped former Sporting Kansas City MLS prospect. Last season, he replaced former PFC defender Lukas MacNaughton, who had moved up to Toronto FC of MLS, and who this month earned his first cap with sa国际传媒 in a pre-World Cup match against Bahrain.
Didic was signed away from FC Edmonton by PFC and made an immediate impact as MacNaughton’s replacement by dominating the Tridents’ box defensively while showing an uncannily opportunistic attacking flair on set pieces, especially corners and free kicks, and scored two goals.
The lanky 27-year-old was born in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and came to Alberta at a young age following the Bosnian War. He began his CPL career with hometown FC Edmonton and made 33 appearances for PFC last season.
“Amer grew into the season,” PFC head coach James Merriman said. “He is a top defender in this league and we believe in his potential and that his best football is in front of him.”
Former MLS Montreal Impact prospect Meilleur-Giguère had 12 appearances for sa国际传媒 Under-20s, including in the 2017 CONCACAF championship, and last year was selected for the sa国际传媒 U-23 team for the CONCACAF regional Tokyo Olympics qualifying tournament. Seamless and quick in movement, the native of Repentigny, Que., will be entering his fourth season with PFC and had 34 appearances last season.
“TMG is a warrior on the field and very important for our team,” said Merriman. “He puts his body on the line and is a true defender. He continues to develop both as a central defender and leader in our group.”
