Western Speedway will be humming with winged sprint cars in August as they battle for the Daffodil Cup.

Bring the ear plugs, definitely, and maybe an umbrella.

The 2018 Western Speedway season is set to start today with an Opening Night of Mayhem card featuring total destruction and rollover events and also demo cars and trucks, bombers and claimers, topped by an evening of fireworks.

It kicks off a 40-race season of events through Sept. 29 at the venerable Langford oval.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited for opening night, and hoping for good weather, but we鈥檙e going to do it regardless of the weather,鈥 said Western Speedway manager Daryl Crocker.

Season highlights include the Reg Midgley sa国际传媒 200 and Billy Foster Memorial 75-Lapper weekend Sept. 1-2. The races are named in honour of the legendary former track manager Midgley; and Foster, who came out of the track to become the first Canadian to race in the Indianapolis 500.

The annual Daffodil Cup, a race since 1961 that has featured Indy 500 drivers such as Foster, Tom Sneva, Jim Malloy and Art Pollard, goes Aug. 17-18.

鈥淲e had a strong 2017, and we鈥檙e expecting to follow up with a really strong season this year, in terms of both attendance and car talent,鈥 said Crocker.

鈥淚t鈥檚 still a good car town, and we average 2,000 fans, and get 4,000 out for our big events.鈥
