The PGA of sa国际传媒 seeding after the stroke play of the national championship, sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade and adidas, did not lie.
Marc-脡tienne Bussi猫res, of Longchamp Club de Golf in Sherbrooke, Que., led the field after the two rounds of stroke play at Victoria Golf Club at 3-under 137 total after Tuesday鈥檚 play. He finished it off with a 3 & 1 championship victory over Billy Walsh of Fairtree Golf Centre in Markham, Ont., on Thursday afternoon.
Bussi猫res, a three-time provincial match-play champ in Quebec, also downed Phil Jonas of Hazelmere Country Club 2 & 1 in the morning semi-final, while Walsh downed Bryn Parry of Point Grey Golf and Country Club 1-up in the other.
Jonas then defeated Parry 1-up for third place in the all-sa国际传媒 third-place game.
Bussi猫res claimed the historic P.D. Ross trophy and the $15,000 top prize.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an honour and a privilege to have your name on a trophy that鈥檚 as historic as the P.D. Ross,鈥 he said. 鈥淭o be beside names like Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and George Knudson is really something. But they鈥檙e legends of the game, and I鈥檓 just trying to get better and keep winning trophies.鈥
Other past champions include Moe Norman, Knudson, Al Balding, Bob Panasik, Stan Leonard and Victoria鈥檚 Jim Rutledge, who was eliminated this year in the first-round of match play on Wednesday.
Walsh also finished as runner-up in 2013 against Parry.
In Thursday鈥檚 final, Bussi猫res took an early 1-up lead on Walsh on the par-5 first hole and didn鈥檛 extend it to 2-up until the par-3 eighth. Walsh closed it to one on No. 10 and evened the championship match at the par-5 12th.
An errant tee shot by Walsh on the par-3 14th, which ended up left and nearly in the parking lot, was the difference as it led to a bogey. Bussi猫res also rolled in a birdie putt on No. 16 before ending it on the 17th and claiming the 2016 title.
After claiming medallist honours on Tuesday, Bussi猫res, 29, defeated Oliver Tubb, Kevin Black, Jonas and Walsh in match-play on his way to the championship title.
CHIP SHOTS: Holly Horwood鈥檚 final-round 77 gave the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club member her third sa国际传媒 Senior Women鈥檚 championship on Thursday at Kelowna Golf and Coutry Club. Her three-day total of 12-over 228 gave her a two-shot win over veteran Jackie Little of Port Alberni. Penny Buziak of Ardmore placed third, another three shots back, while Josee Deslauriers of Morningstar was tied for fourth at 234.
