HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University has agreed to settle the gender equity lawsuit that led a federal judge to rule that cheerleading isn't a sport.
The school and the American Civil Liberties Union of sa国际传媒icut announced Friday that under the proposed settlement, the school will add athletic opportunities for women, and improve support of its current women's teams.
The lawsuit was filed in 2009 by members of the women's volleyball team after Quinnipiac announced its intent to eliminate that team in favour of competitive cheer.
A U.S. District Court judge had issued an injunction against the school, ruling that cheerleading didn't meet the standards of a sport under Title IX.
The judge also found that Quinnipiac had been manipulating its rosters to make it appear that women had more opportunities than they did.
