Rams upset Bulldogs to win Lower Island girls volleyball final

Having suffered their first match defeat of the season at their own tournament last weekend, the Belmont Bulldogs were hoping to bounce back with vengeance on Tuesday.

Having suffered their first match defeat of the season at their own tournament last weekend, the Belmont Bulldogs were hoping to bounce back with vengeance on Tuesday.

It didn鈥檛 happen as the hosts lost the Ron Greene Cup (the Lower Island championship) in their own gym 2-1 (25-23, 21-25, 15-12) to the Mount Douglas Rams.

Up against the other five quadruple-A teams, the No. 1-provincially ranked Bulldogs (who will likely lose that seed now) were still minus two starters as the Rams pulled off a second straight win over Belmont.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not their full team, but we鈥檒l take it anyway we can get it at this point,鈥 said Rams coach Derek Horton. 鈥淎t their tournament, they were struggling with injuries and had some provincial team players away.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e still a skilled team and we鈥檙e looking forward to more battles [at the Islands].鈥

Mount Douglas will host those Islands on Nov. 18-19.

Mount Douglas and Claremont swept their opening games against Reynolds and Spectrum, respectively. The Rams then downed Oak Bay 2-1 (25-23, 23-25, 15-9) in semis, while Belmont swept Claremont 2-0 (25-14, 25-13).

Oak Bay eventually took third and will be seeded as such at the Islands after a 2-0 (26-16, 25-15) victory over Claremont. Reynolds dowed Spectrum 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) in the fifth-place game.
