A pair of Westshore Rebels were recognized for their performances in Saturday’s gut-wrenching 37-36 loss to the Kamloops Broncos.
Quarterback Ashton Mackinnon claimed his second offensive player of the week nod after completing 21 of 27 passes for 310 yards, including three touchdowns. The six-foot-seven pivot added three rushes for 15 yards (including a touchdown) and even made three catches off trick plays for another 58 yards, including a two-point convert.
In all he totalled 382 yards of offence.
“He made a couple of plays that were costly, but in watching film, his footwork, mechanics and decision making was vastly improved,” said Rebels head coach J.C. Boice. “He’s starting to figure out how to do what I want and the game stats reflect it. It was a very efficient [performance].”
The multi-faceted Mackinnon also punted five times for 208 yards. He is currently second in the league in passing yardage with 1,737 yards, just 25 yards behind Kamloops’ Stephen Schuweiler. Mackinnon has completed 116 of 205 passes for a 56.6 completion percentage. Schuweiler has connected on 114 of 175 tosses for 65.1 per cent.
Rebels’ lineman James Bradley had five solo tackles and five assists, one quarterback sack and a fumble recovery to be named defensive player of the week.
“The defence’s improvement is getting substantial and you can quote me on this, James Bradley will be in the CFL soon. He is a dude,” Boice added.
Bradley is currently third in the league in the defensive points system behind Quinton Bowles and Cole Virtanen, both of the Vancouver Island Raiders.
All saʴý Football Conference teams are on a bye week and the 1-5 Rebels return to action Sept. 12 in Chilliwack against the winless Valley Huskers.
