WESTSHORE 27
VANCOUVER ISLAND 25
The Westshore Rebels used a strong second half to get into the win column in the saʴý Football Conference standings on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Vancouver Island Raiders 27-25 at Caledonia Park.
Both teams are now 1-1 in the 2017 season. The Rebels are now undefeated against the Raiders in the last three games, with two wins and a tie.
Down 14-3 late in the second quarter on Saturday, the Rebels used a 109-yard drive to cut the Raiders’ lead to 14-10 just prior to the halftime break.
Two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including one off a blocked punt, propelled the visitors to the victory as they assumed a 27-17 lead.
Vancouver Island added a late score and a two-point conversion to make it close.
“It was a great second half,” said Rebels head coach Charly Cardilicchia.
“We made some great adjustments and we had to come together as a team.
“That drive late in the first haf set the tone for us,” added Cardilicchia, who knew the importance of getting a win.
“It’s a lot better feeling than last week. The bottom line is this was a good team win and 0-2 was not an option for us.”
Last week, the Rebels were edged 19-15 in Kelowna by the Okanagan Sun in a rematch of last year’s Cullen Cup, which Westshore won.
The Raiders downed the Langley Rams 20-13 on the road.
Westshore now travels to Kamloops next Saturday to face the Broncos at 6 p.m. while the Raiders venture to Chilliwack to face the Valley Huskers at 2 p.m. in Week 3 play.
