Rebels’ spring camp provides optimism

Westshore Rebels president Roger Wade and his coaching staff headed into the long weekend in search of players for the 2013 saʴý Football Conference season and, in particular, a running back as two-year standout Greg Morris has opted not to return west from his native Ontario.

Instead, Morris is headed to junior college at New Mexico Military Institute to continue his scholastic football career.

With gaps to fill, the Rebels held the franchise’s annual spring camp at Westhills Stadium.

Morris was an All-Canadian in 2012 after rushing for 1,527 yards on 150 carries and scoring 14 touchdowns, leading the league in rushing and surpassing saʴý Lions star and former Vancouver Island Raiders’ running back Andrew Harris for the second-highest run totals in a season.

The previous year, Morris was named the BCFC rookie of the year after producing 1,064 yards rushing on 128 carries.

“I’m not sold that Greg is not coming back,” said Wade. “But he’s committed to going and we have to run our program like he’s not coming back. There were a couple of pretty good kids that we saw on the weekend — specifically a kid out of Montreal and another out of Windsor [Ont.].”

There was also a quarterback from Edmonton who impressed the Rebels’ crew.

“That kid is a stud,” said Wade, choosing to keep names to himself. “He looked really good, but all our other quarterbacks looked really good, too. If we get all three of them back it will be great because those three kids can do something.”

Overall, Wade was happy with how camp — which included instruction from former Rebels and current Canadian Football Leaguers Tim O’Neill and Jesse Newman — carried through the weekend.

“I think it went quite well,” he said. “We don’t do what the Raiders do, like bringing in 150 kids and then tell 75 of them to beat it. We were short on numbers, we were planning on upwards of 70, but we also don’t get all our vets to come back. We know they’re going to be playing. We want to look at the guys where we need to fill some holes.

“We had some good kids out of Cowichan and a couple from Belmont. Real good kids out of Belmont and that’s what we want, local kids,” stressed Wade.
