Abigail Rigsby pulled off a major heist in broad daylight on Thursday.
The Crown Isle Golf Resort member out of Courtenay recorded a bogey-free round of 6-under 65 鈥 a new course record 鈥 to steal the sa国际传媒 Juvenile Girls Championship at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club in Vernon.
Rigsby鈥檚 three-day total of 6-under 207 was three shots better than Surrey鈥檚 Hannah Lee who slipped to a 1-over 72 on the day after opening rounds of 68 and 70. Rigsby started the tournament with scores of 72 and 70.
鈥淚 just found out at the scoring tent that I had set the new course record,鈥 Rigsby told sa国际传媒 Golf officials afterward. 鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty surreal.
鈥淚鈥檝e played some really good golf ever since the Canadians, where I broke par there for a round. I came back to my home course [Crown Isle] and shot a 69 and I鈥檝e just played really well.鈥
Starting the day four shots back of Lee, Rigsby rolled in three straight birdies to overtake the lead by her fifth hole.
鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 believe all those putts dropped,鈥 said Rigsby. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 really explain it, but it felt good to get ahead.鈥
Nanaimo鈥檚 Shirin Anjarwalla was fourth overall with rounds of 75-73-68. Her 68 was the second lowest score of the day.
Rigsby鈥檚 friend Megan Ratcliffe, of Pheasant Glen, was 11th overall with rounds of 74-76-75 for a 225 total while sisters Mirai and Akari Hiyashi, of Uplands Golf Club, finished 14th and 16th, respectively with 231 and 238 totals.
In juvenile boys competition, A.J. Ewart of Pitt Meadows ran off and hid with a six-shot victory over Royal Colwood鈥檚 Keaton Gudz, who started out well with a 3-under 68 on Tuesday only to slip to a 70 and 73 to finish it off. Ewart鈥檚 rounds included a solid 66 on Day 2.
Tristan Mandur of Arbutus Ridge finished strong with a 67 on Thursday to go with his 68, 77 start to tie for third spot with Andrew Spalti of Shaughnessy with 212 totals, one shot back of Gudz.
Callum Davison, also of Pheasant Glen, was fifth after rounds of 67-70-76, while Ethan Ko of Royal Colwood was tied for 29th with a 229 total.
