Regular hoops season ends with win for Vikes men, upset loss for women

Meanwhile, it was big Saturday for women鈥檚 basketball nationally with sa国际传媒 advancing to the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics in the FIBA qualifier at Belgium. But halfway around the world in Langley, the UVic Vikes could be excused if they weren鈥檛 in such a celebratory mood.

The playoff-bound Vikes (12-8) concluded their women鈥檚 sa国际传媒 West regular season with a 68-64 upset loss to the Trinity Western Spartans, who will miss the playoffs at 6-14.

The Vikes, who beat Trinity Western 63-57 on Friday, held a commanding lead in the fourth quarter Saturday before a 16-2 run by the Spartans turned the tables.

Marissa Dheensaw had 13聽points for UVic, rookie Tana Pankratz 12, Morgan Roskelley 11, Katie Langdon nine and Ashlyn Day eight. Dheensaw hauled in nine boards and Day six.

It was the final regular-season game in the careers of Langdon, Roskelley, Dheensaw and guard Kristy Gallagher.

The Vikes men headed into the final weekend of the sa国际传媒 West season missing forwards Matthew Ellis, Dominick Oliveri and Jason Scully and needing their guards to come up clutch.

They did with rookie sensation Diego Maffia scoring 20 points and sophomore Aaron Tesfagiorgis 13.

It was the final regular season game for Vikes forward Hayden Lejeune, who scored 13 points.

Both UVic teams have qualified for the sa国际传媒 West playoffs and are guaranteed to at least host first-round games next weekend on Ken and Kathy Shields Court at CARSA Gym against opponents still to be determined.

The top 12 teams in the conference make the playoffs with the top four receiving first-round byes. The other teams will play single-game play-ins with No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.
