The Rebels chewed up the Huskers 45-14 back in Week 4, building up a 35-0 lead after three quarters to record Westshore鈥檚 one and only win.
Westshore (1-5) is coming off three respectable performances and looking to build toward the future. Of their five losses, one was by two points to the Vancouver Island Raiders and one was by one point to Kamloops.
鈥淲e did explode on them the last time and we want to continue to build momentum,鈥 said Rebels鈥 head coach J.C. Boice. 鈥淲e want to keep that momentum going because we do have a big game the following week against the Raiders, so we want to continue to prepare well before we go into that hornets鈥 nest.
鈥淵es, this week is a team we should beat, but I want our guys to be ready. The kids are getting more confident in our schemes.鈥
The Rebels remain hard pressed to make the playoffs, trailing Kamloops and the Raiders (both 4-2) and Langley (3-3). Following this week, Westshore has games in Nanaimo and then at home to Okanagan and Langley.
In the win against the Huskers, Rebels quarterback Ashton Mackinnon completed 29 of 38 passes for a massive 427 yards, which included three touchdowns. With the performance he earned BCFC offensive player of the week honours (the first of two so far this season).
Mackinnon currently sits second in league passing yards with 1,737, completing 116 of 205 passes. He is also a surprising fourth in league rushing with 286 yards.
Against the Huskers he connected with Joe Barkhouse for two TDs and found Hunter Lake on the other. Lake had a field day in that game, hauling in nine catches for 183 yards, while Talyn Davies also nabbed nine for 130 yards.
Davies also replaced Mackinnon at quarterback and completed three of six passes for 72 yards and Lake also completed his one and only pass of the day for 72 yards as the Rebels racked up 542 yards through the air. In total, nine different receivers caught passes in that victory.
Mackinnon also ran 10 times for 86 yards including two touchdowns.
鈥淚t all begins with our play up front,鈥 Boice said of his offensive line that includes Aarmin Purewal, Connor Bryan, Kolton Henderson, Jake Hall and Kyle Harrington.
Defensively, Sheldon Mack had led the Rebels with six tackles and an assist in the win, but the Mount Douglas grad鈥檚 season ended due to injury a few weeks ago. Bryce Mosley recorded three tackles, two assists, two special-teams tackles and a pair of knockdowns on that productive day versus the Huskers.
Overall, Lake is fourth in BCFC receiving yardage with 32 catches for 540 yards and teammate Eric Williams is eighth with 274 yards on just 16 grabs. Jordan Worth (266 yards), Barkhouse (237) and Davies (219) are all close behind.
