The standards are pretty steep when it comes to Reynolds Roadrunners soccer, on both the boys鈥 and girls鈥 sides.
鈥淲e have high expectations of ourselves,鈥 said co-captain Samantha Charlton, after the Roadrunners successfully defended their Ryan Cup Lower Island girls鈥 high school Triple-A championship.
Grade 11 striker Helena Peskett scored in overtime to give Reynolds a 2-1 victory over the Oak Bay Breakers in the 2019 Ryan Cup final Tuesday at the University of Victoria turf fields.
Charlton has picked up some of the pertinent values of sport through aunt Nancy Mollenhauer, who played field hockey for sa国际传媒 in the Olympics, and cousin Anna Mollenhauer, who is on the junior national team.
鈥淭here are no egos,鈥 said Charlton. 鈥淓veryone plays for each other. We have a total team environment.鈥
One that feels it has something to prove.
The Grade 12s feel they should have done better than fourth place in sa国际传媒 last season after capturing the Ryan Cup and Island championships.
The process begins anew with the Island Triple-A championship tournament May 13-14 at Oak Bay. The Breakers, led by their fine captain and UVic Vikes-bound recruit Presley Rangel, will have something to say on home turf. So will another powerhouse program in the Royal Bay Ravens. But only two teams will qualify for the sa国际传媒 championships May 30 to June 1 in Surrey.
鈥淲e have an intense rivalry with Oak Bay,鈥 said Charlton.
The Roadrunners are upbeat about their chances.
鈥淲e have confidence in each other,鈥 said Reynolds co-captain Natasha Chojnacki.
That was evident after Oak Bay took a 1-0 lead Tuesday in the Ryan Cup final.
鈥淲e kept our composure and didn鈥檛 stop until it was over,鈥 said Charlton.
The Double-A Island championship is May 13-14 at Brentwood College and the Single-A Islands are Thursday and Friday at St. Andrew鈥檚. The Double-A provincials are May 30 to June 1 in Campbell River and Single-A on those dates in Nakusp.
