It was a scorching final for a scorching day as the Reynolds Roadrunners rallied from a two-goal half-time deficit to outlast the Stelly’s Stingers 3-2 on penalties in the final of the girls’ Triple-A Island high school soccer championship tournament Tuesday at Goudy Field in Langford.

The South Island top-seed Roadrunners trailed the South second-seed Stingers by two goals at the half before tying the game 2-2 in the second half. Double overtime could not solve matters, so the championship went to penalty kicks with Reynolds prevailing from the spot in the fifth round.

Stelly’s also reached the final of the Ryan Cup Lower Island championship last week before losing by a goal to the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags.

The South Island third-seed Oak Bay Breakers blanked the North third-seed Dover Bay Dolphins 4-0 in the Island Triple-A bronze-medal game played on the Royal Bay Secondary School turf pitch in Colwood.

Since they did not meet over the eight-team, two-day Island tournament, the Breakers can challenge the Stingers for the second Island berth into the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Triple-A championship tournament June 1-3 in Kelowna behind the champion Roadrunners. The second-place challenge game between the Breakers and Stingers will be played next Tuesday at the Stelly’s school pitch.

Meanwhile, the SMUS Blue Jags blanked the Mark Isfeld Ice 2-0 in the final of the girls’ Double-A Island high school championship tournament Tuesday in Courtenay.

Brentwood College defeated Brooks 3-1 in the bronze-medal game.

The top four teams will all advance to the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Double-A championship tournament June 1-3 at the University of Victoria.

Because of the weather, mandatory 60-second hydration breaks were taken every 20 minutes during the games of the Island championship tournaments held Monday and Tuesday.
