Featured teams at the event, for 11-12-year-olds, include Layritz, Hampton, representing District 7, and the Ontario rep from Windsor South.
The tournament gets underway with opening ceremonies tonight at 5:30 p.m., followed by Game 1 between Hampton and Layritz at 6:30 p.m. At 6:30 on Friday night, Layritz meets Windsor South, and the round-robin winds up with Hampton up against Windsor South at noon on Saturday.
In the playoff round, the second- and third-place teams face off on Sunday, with the winner taking on the first-place finisher in the championship game on Monday. Both games begin at noon.
As well, a skills competition is being held on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., when players will showcase some of their individual skills in home-run hitting, base running, team throwing relay and a few more fun events.
The Canadian champion scores a berth in the Little League World Series, Aug. 7-14, in Portland, Ore.
While Victoria is home to the Major softballers this weekend, several other local teams are heading out on the road for various championship venues in August. Among them, the Layritz Senior softball team (with players mainly from the Victoria Devils and Lambrick Park Secondary Softball Academy) is off to the Senior Little League World Series, Aug. 4-10, in Delaware. It鈥檚 an experienced squad all-around, with players Jenna Saulnier, Sidney Sparanese, Christina Bourassa and Hailey Young, in particular, veterans of three World Series appearances. Last year, Layritz earned a silver medal in the Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland, Wash.
Also, the Devils 96 finished third at the midget provincials and qualified for nationals in P.E.I., and the Under-14 A Devils 99 were fifth at the sa国际传媒s, earning a trip to the nationals, Aug. 14-18, in Montreal. A combo Layritz/Hampton Junior softball team, ages 13 and 14, is going to the Canadians in Saint John, N.B., and for the U-18 B Cordova Bay Blackout, a good season culminated in a berth in the Western Canadian Championship, Aug. 8-11, in Richmond.
