The New Westminster Salmonbellies crashed the party on Friday night, stealing two points on the evening the Victoria Shamrocks honoured Fred (Whitey) Severson by retiring his number at The Q Centre.
Jersey No. 8 is up in the rafters, but the visiting Bellies put 12 up on the scoreboard in a 12-9 victory over the gracious hosts before a crowd of close to 3,000 fans who shared in Severson’s night.
New Westminster opened up a 5-2 lead after the opening 20 minutes and snapped the Shamrocks’ three-game winning streak. The ’Rocks — who did tie it at 7-7 at one point — slip to 6-3 while the Salmonbellies improve to 4-3-1 in the Western Lacrosse Association standings.
Ian McShane and Corey Small, each with a pair, Paul Brebber, Chris Wardle, Jeff Shattler, Cory Conway and Tyler Burton tallied for the Shamrocks. Small and Conway added three assists each.
Curtis Hodgson, Sean Lundstrom, Jordan McBride, Mitch Jones, Mike Messenger, Tyler Crompton, Jeff Cornwall, Johnny Pearson, Dane Sorenson, Brandon Goodwin, Brent Dobray and Justin Goodwin all scored for the Salmonbellies. It was the first time this season that Victoria has not reached double digits.
Cody Hagedorn faced a whopping 45 shots in the Shamrocks net, allowing 10 goals before being replaced by Adam Shute (recently acquired in a trade) early in the third. Shute allowed just one goal and the Bellies added an empty-netter. Eric Penney saw 43 shots in the New West goal.
Victoria does not play again until July 6 in Langley against the Thunder.
