It was not a good day to be holding an early lead at the Scotties sa国际传媒 Women鈥檚 Curling Championship at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam on Saturday.
Six-time provincial champion Kelly Scott of Kelowna jumped out to a 7-0 lead after just three ends, only to lose 11-10 to Karla Thompson of Kamloops in the Page playoff 1 vs. 2 game in the morning.
In the late evening draw, Victoria Curling Centre鈥檚 Sarah Wark was up 5-1 after three ends and led 6-3 after five, but lost a similar heartbreaker, 10-8 in an extra end to Diane Gushulak of the Royal City Curling Club, who stole two for the victory.
Wark鈥檚 loss means the skip and her team of third Simone Brosseau, second Michelle Allen and lead Rachelle Kallechy were eliminated as Gushulak advanced to this morning鈥檚 semi-final game against Scott.
That game will be broadcast at 11 a.m. on Sportsnet Pacific.
Thompson, with the VCC鈥檚 Tracey Lavery playing second, advanced straight to this afternoon鈥檚 4 p.m. championship final, which will be broadcast on Sportsnet One with the winner advancing to the Scotties national event in Grande Prairie, Alta, next month.
EXTRA END: Carley St. Blaze, also of the VCC and an instructor at the club's academy, was named the Kay Giles award winner for sportsmanship. She plays lead on Kesa van Osch鈥檚 Nanaimo rink, which failed to make playoffs.
