This may be looked back on as the weekend the Victoria Shamrocks (8-2) truly displayed their bona fides as a favourite for the 2015 Mann Cup national Senior 鈥楢鈥 lacrosse championship.
Victoria head coach Bob Heyes described Friday night鈥檚 comprehensive 18-8 dismantling of the second-place New Westminster Salmonbellies (7-3) as a 鈥測ardstick game.鈥 By that token, Saturday night鈥檚 follow-up in Coquitlam against the Adanacs (4-5) might have had trap door written all over it. But the Shamrocks avoided any trip-ups by defeating the A鈥檚 15-3 in a total clampdown performance for their eighth consecutive victory.
Dan Dawson continues to be a monstrous presence in his illustrious lacrosse career and led Victoria with two goals and four assists. Jesse King, a Claremont grad out of the Ohio State Buckeyes NCAA field-lacrosse program, is another fine player and he came through with three goals and three assists.
鈥淚t was a hot building but we played well defensively as a unit,鈥 King said. 鈥淲ith the amazing talent we have, we don鈥檛 have many weak points.鈥
A hallmark of the Victoria offence is that the top scorers record as many assists as goals.
鈥淭he key to our offence is the way we swing the ball from side to side,鈥 noted King.
Former Adanacs star Daryl Veltman haunted his former team with three goals and two assists while Corey Small added two goals and three assists and league-leading scorer Rhys Duch two goals and two assists.
