The Western Lacrosse Association鈥檚 Island derby continues today when the Victoria Shamrocks take on the Nanaimo Timbermen at 6听p.m. at the Q Centre.
The Timbermen haven鈥檛 made the WLA playoffs in 10听years, but are much improved this year at 2-3, and beat Victoria 12-9 in the first meeting of the derby two weeks ago at Frank Crane Arena in the Harbour City.
The 2017 league runner-up Victoria squad is 2-2 and halted a two-game losing skid on Wednesday by defeating the Thunder 14-7 at the Langley Events Centre.
Heading into action Saturday night, Casey Jackson of the Shamrocks was second in league scoring with 24 points, two behind co-leaders Mitch Jones of the New Westminster Salmonbellies and Curtis Dickson of the Maple Ridge Burrards. Jesse King of the Shamrocks and Jordan McBride of New Westminster rounded out the top-five with 22 points each. The Salmonbellies were playing in a late-finishing game Saturday night in Coquitlam against the Adanacs.
Jackson is second in goals in the WLA with 13, behind Dickson鈥檚 18.
Chase Fraser leads Nanaimo with 15 points.
The Shamrocks are in New Westminster on Thursday night for a game at Queens Park Arena against the defending league champion Salmonbellies.
