Tennis players shine

Victoria’s top junior tennis players tuned up for some upcoming tournaments by taking part in a unique Lower Mainland versus Vancouver Island/Interior event last weekend at the Town and Country Tennis Club in Delta.

Top teams from the Mainlands went up against teams from the Island and Okanagan. The boys Island/Interior team finished second overall thanks to impressive showing from Victoria’s Brooke Hoole (5-1) and and Daniel Diemer (4-2). On the girls’ side, Victoria’s Nina Radisavljevic went 4-2 and Mateya Radisavljevic went 3-3.

Hoops clinic on way

Young basketball players and coaches on the Island will get a chance to learn from an NCAA level coach later this month when Dustin Kerns, assistant coach at Santa Clara University, hosts a clinic at Pacific Christian School. Santa Clara is the alma matter of Victoria native and two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash.

The clinic will run May 25 and 26 and there will be morning coaching clinics ( 9 a.m. to noon) followed by afternoon players camps (1 to 4 p.m.) on both days. Players (boys and girls) aged 9 to 16 and interested coaches are invited to register at [email protected] or call 604-527-5041.

Scutt wins at Arbutus

Defending Order of Merit champion Gordy Scutt served notice that he’s ready to defend his Vancouver Island Professional Tour title again this season.

Scutt, a teaching pro at Olympic View’s Golf sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Academy, put together two solid rounds en route to winning the Tour’s first major of year — the Arbutus Ridge Open — last weekend. After opening with an even-par 70, Scutt fired a final-round 68 on Sunday to beat Edd Boudreau by two strokes. Rob Cruise finished third with a two-round total of 144, while John Randle was another shot back after closing with a 70.

After missing the first tournament of the season, Scutt now trails only Boudreau in the Order of Merit of standings after three events. Cruise is third, with Kevin Maxwell and Cordova Bay’s Axle Riley rounding out the top five.

Next up for the Island Pro Tour is a stop at Qualicum Beach Memorial on May 14.
