Shawnigan squashes competition

It鈥檚 a hat-trick of squash titles for Shawnigan Lake School鈥檚 Michael Mehl. Mehl, originally from Alberta, won his third straight U-19 title last weekend at the Canadian Junior Squash Championships at Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver.

Mehl, originally from Alberta, won his third straight U-19 title last weekend at the Canadian Junior Squash Championships at Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver.

To gain the title, Mehl had to beat his schoolmate, Ryan Picken, in the gold-medal game. Both Mehl and Picken advanced the U-19 final without losing a game and in the championship match it was Mehl prevailing 11-2, 11-4, 11-13, 11-4.

Following the tournament, Picken was named the winner of the Alexander Doucas Memorial Award, given to the junior player best exemplifying spirit of fair play, sportsmanship and commitment to excellence.

Aboriginal hockey nationals here

On Monday, more than 400 young aboriginal hockey players will hit the ice in the Cowichan Valley hoping to follow in the footsteps of NHLers of aboriginal descent such as Carey Price, Jordan Nolan and T.J. Oshie.

The 2017 National Aboriginal Midget Hockey Championship takes place May 1-6 at the Island Savings Centre and Cowichan Lake Recreation Centre. Male and female all-star teams from sa国际传媒, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces will vie for the national championship.

Golden weekend for Falcon gymnasts

Falcon Gymnastics members ventured to Duncan last weekend for the annual ORCA Invitational meet and brought home plenty of gold.

Nineteen Falcon Gymnastics athletes made the trek north and they combined for 45 medals, including nine overall gold medals.

Leading the way at the Junior Olympic 4 2006 level was Gabrielle Tsui whose all-around score of 37.225 earned her the all-around silver medal. Tsui won gold on bars and beam, bronze on vault and fourth on the floor.

In the Junior Olympic 2004-05 level, Ella Kendler won overall gold thanks a gold on bars, silver on vault and bronze on the beam. Clubmate Chantell Turlock finished second overall thanks to a gold on floor and silver on the beam.

At the Junior Olympic 4 2007-09 level, Georgia Widdowson won the all-around silver medal after finishing with silver on vault and beam and bronze on the floor.

At Junior Olympic 3 2007, Ava Webster won all-around silver thanks to gold on the beam, silver on vault and bronze on floor.

In the Junior Olympic 3 2008 division, Maile Chow won the all-around gold after winning gold on vault, silver on floor and bronze on beam. And in the Junior Olympic 3 2009-10 event, Madison Nguyen won overall gold thanks to gold medals on beam and floor and a silver on bars.
