Sierra Jackson runs a qualifying lap during their Daffodil Cup races at Western Speedway.

Sierra Jackson from Middleton, Idaho received an early birthday present on Saturday at Western Speedway before approximately 3,000 fans.

Jackson, who turns 20 today, won the prestigious Daffodil Cup by one point - 168 to 167 - over Scott Aumen from Duncan. The Cup was awarded to the driver who accumulated the most points during the two days of the competition.

In the 52-year history of the Cup, Jackson is the first female to win it.

"In the main event, I ran a patient race,'' said Jackson, who won her first race at the Speedway. "I didn't want to cause trouble or get into trouble. I let the car do everything it could and it was enough to win.''

Entering the final 40-lap feature race, Jackson needed to win the race while Aumen could not finish in the top three to win the Cup. Aumen placed in fourth spot, behind Jackson, Ron Larson from Quesnel and Matt Mansell.

"I knew before the race what had to happen for me to win the Daffodil Cup,'' said Jackson. "I had to win it and Scott had to finish fourth and that is exactly what happened. I knew that Scott had a fast car and I kept checking the board to see where he was during the race.''

Jackson and Aumen started the final race in ninth and 10th place and Jackson worked her way to front on lap 27. After an early caution flag on lap two, the final 38 laps went without stoppage.

One of the first drivers to come over and congratulate Jackson was Aumen.

Aumen appeared to have everything going his way after he had the fastest qualifying car both nights. He also won Friday's main event, followed by Jackson and Andy DuBois from Washington.

However, in Saturday main event, Aumen couldn't make up enough ground against the leaders. Aumen had won the Cup four times in the last five years and he was the defending champion.

Aumen started the night with the fast time - 13.676 seconds - only half a second off the track record held by Randy Price. Jackson and Mansell tied for second place with laps of 13.788 seconds.

In Saturday's 25-lap old timers main event, Lary Joyce from Nanoose Bay was the winner, followed by Jesse Dardingo and George Jensen.

Deter Lejeune captured the wingless sprint car 30lap feature, just holding off Mark Stewart and Chris Root.
