Tyler Soy was the man of the hour, but Linden McCorrister and the Brandon Wheat Kings spoiled the party.

Twenty-year-old Soy, a draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks, set the record for most career points by a Victoria Royals player when he finished off a 2-on-1 with Dante Hannoun for his fifth goal of the season and 249th career point as a Royal. But the Wheat Kings got a hat-trick from McCorrister to defeat Victoria 4-2 in front of 4,360 fans at the Westman Centre in Brandon.

Soy entered Saturday’s game tied with Jack Walker at 248 career points for the Royals. The Cloverdale product is now 15 points back of Brandon Magee for the Victoria Royals-Chilliwack Bruins franchise record for career points.

McCorrister opened the scoring on a Wheat Kings power play five minutes into the game, but Soy’s marker brought the Royals even.

After captain Matthew Phillips struck for his 11th of the season — pushing the Calgary Flames draft pick’s point streak to 13 games — to give the Royals a 2-1 lead, the Wheat Kings’ potent power play went to work again. McCorrister beat Dean McNabb in the Royals net with 2:30 to play in the second period.

That set the stage for Tanner Kaspick’s game-winner eight minutes into the third period, while McCorrister completed the hat-trick with an empty-netter.

Brandon went into the game leading the league in power-play goals and finished 2-for-7 with the man advantage.

The Royals had trouble on the power play, going 0-for-7. The Wheat Kings (9-3-1) also got three assists from Los Angeles Kings second-round draft pick Kale Clague.

The Royals (9-3-1) are now 2-3 on their seven-game road trip, which continues Tuesday night in Saskatoon against the Blades.
