The Trinity Western Spartans upset the University of Victoria Vikes 3-1 Friday in sa国际传媒 West men's soccer action in Langley.

The Vikes, defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions and ranked No. 1 to begin this season, had trouble generating much offence against the stingy Spartans.

It was the first regular season loss for the Vikes since they played Trinity Western this time last year at Rogers Park. Following that 2-1 loss last season, the Vikes went 12 games in the regular season before losing to the Alberta Golden Bears in the sa国际传媒 West Final Four.

Trinity Western midfielder Jason Wiens did much of the offensive damage with two first-half goals. He opened the scoring with a long shot that eluded UVic goalkeeper Elliot Mitrou and then he added his second when he deflected a free kick.

Spencer Schmidt tallied Trinity Western's third goal in the second half.

In the 90th minute, Victoria was awarded a penalty kick and Craig Gorman made no mistake with his low drive.

The Vikes now have a record of 2-1, while the Spartans have two wins and a tie.

UVic is back in action tonight in Vancouver against UBC.

The UVic women's team returns to action today in Prince George against the University of Northern sa国际传媒 Timberwolves. The Vikes are 1-0-1, while the T-Wolves are 0-1-1.
