Spartans hand UVic women first hoops loss

The University of Victoria Vikes women鈥檚 basketball squad is no longer unbeaten, dropping their first game of the season 76-68 to the Trinity Western Spartans at the Langley Events Centre on Friday night. Both teams are now 4-1 in sa国际传媒 West play.

The University of Victoria Vikes women鈥檚 basketball squad is no longer unbeaten, dropping their first game of the season 76-68 to the Trinity Western Spartans at the Langley Events Centre on Friday night.

Both teams are now 4-1 in sa国际传媒 West play.

Jessie Brown and Tessa Ratzlaff had 22 and 20 points, respectively, to lead the Spartans, who have now won four straight. Marissa Dheensaw led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the losing cause for the Vikes, who will attempt to rebound today at 5 p.m. at the LEC.

In men鈥檚 play, the Vikes recorded their second win of the season against the winless Spartans by way of an 85-62 count.

St. Michaels University School grad Jason Scully led the Vikes with 21 points, while Justin Kinnear and Claremont grad Taylor Montgomery-Stinson chipped in with 15 and 14, respectively.

Meanwile, at the women鈥檚 U Sports soccer nationals, the Vikes bounced back from an opening loss to record a 1-0 penalty kicks victory over the No. 1-seed and defending champion Laval Rouge et Or on Friday in Winnipeg.

The Vikes will now play for fifth place on Sunday against host Manitoba.

鈥淚鈥檓 really happy with the performance of our players, it was a great response by us after the disappointment of [Thursday],鈥 said Vikes head coach Tracy David. 鈥淚 am really proud of our players.

鈥淲e are making the best of a tough situation,鈥 she added. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 have the performance that we so badly wanted to have [Thursday] but we want to take away something from this championship and we will be gunning for the win for sure.鈥

Rachel Baird, Stephanie Badilla Gutierrez, Victoria Wulf and Brea Christie all scored in kicks and 1st team All-Canadian goalkeeper Puck Louwes made two key stops after Laval scored on its first attempt to secure the win.
