A 12-goal opening day led to a 2-0 record for the St. Andrew鈥檚 Sabres, who are playing host to the single-A senior girls鈥 Island soccer championship at Beckwith Park.
The Sabres followed up an opening 6-0 win over Duncan Christian on Friday morning with a 6-3 victory over North Island Secondary School in the afternoon in the four-team tournament, which continues this morning with the final round-robin games at 9:30.
Queen Margaret鈥檚 School bounced back from an opening 3-1 loss to N.I.S.S. with a 5-2 win over Duncan Christian to set up Day 2.
鈥淲e couldn鈥檛 ask for a better position with two wins. It puts us in a good place where we can, hopefully, make the final game,鈥 said Sabres coach Dean Anderson, whose team benefitted from a pair of N.I.S.S. own goals in the afternoon victory.
They poured in plenty of their own, though as Anna Hedji, Bridget Mateyko, Emily Blair and Hewat Tedla all tallied. Lizzie Burke earned her second win in goal for the Sabres. After keeping a clean sheet in the morning, Burke allowed a pair of goals from Emma Mitchell and a well placed penalty kick from Kale Iceton.
鈥淲e had a bit of a drought in our last few [league] games. Here we scored early, which opened the floodgates, I guess, for us. We had the opportunities and we buried them,鈥 said Anderson, who is hoping to get to provincials again after finishing in the middle of the pack in 2016.
鈥淚t would be great to be a part of it. It would be a great opportunity if we could return.鈥
The top two here will continue on to Kelowna in two weeks time for the sa国际传媒 single-A championship.
St. Andrew鈥檚 meets Queen Margaret鈥檚 this morning while N.I.S.S. faces Duncan Christian. The top two meet in the gold-medal game with the bottom two playing for bronze at 1:30 p.m. at Beckwith.
