Jamie Benn was squeezing in as much ice time as he could Thursday morning at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre after skating in practice with the Victoria Royals, and not leaving until chased off by the Zamboni.

And it鈥檚 a good thing he got the extra work in because today he will be in Dallas signing a new contract with the NHL鈥檚 Stars.

Benn and the Stars agreed to a $26.25 million, five-year contract on Thursday night. The all-star centre gets $5.25 million each season. The 23-year-old was a restricted free agent who set career highs with 26 goals, 37 assists and 63 points for the Stars last season.

鈥淲e know how important he is to our hockey club and at the end of the day, it鈥檚 the right thing,鈥 Dallas GM Joe Nieuwendyk said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 good for our hockey club, it鈥檚 great for Jamie.鈥

Benn will join his brother, Jordie Benn, who鈥檚 a rookie blueliner with the Stars.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been tough watching the games, especially with my brother out there playing and looking like he might stick, and I really want to get out there and be a part of it, too,鈥 said Jamie Benn on Thursday morning at the Memorial Centre.

Benn is expected to arrive in Dallas this morning, and might be in uniform Saturday night when the Stars play St. Louis.
